Low chlorate minerals for healthy development

Jost Chemical now offers “low chlorate” mineral salts with ultra-low levels of chlorates and perchlorates

Perchlorates can interfere with the human body’s ability to absorb iodine into the thyroid gland, which is a critical element in the production of thyroid hormones. In fetuses and infants, thyroid hormones are critical for normal growth and development of the central nervous system. The new low chlorate mineral line from Jost Chemical assists customers to comply with (EU) 2020/685 and has ultra-low levels of chlorates and perchlorates:

  • Chlorates: <0.25 ppm
  • Perchlorates: <0.05 ppm

The “low chlorate” product line is expanding and currently includes Potassium Phosphate Monobasic, Potassium Phosphate Dibasic, Manganese Sulfate Monohydrate, Sodium Phosphate Dibasic, Cupric Sulfate Pentahydrate, Calcium Hydroxide, Zinc Sulfate Heptahydrate, and Calcium Phosphate Tribasic.

Why are chlorates and perchlorates a health concern?

Infant formulas are sophisticated milk-based foods for infants that are used as a substitute/complement for breast milk. These formulations include various components such as essential minerals for the healthy development of the infants. Dedicated to a sensitive population (0 to 6 months) with their particular dietary needs, vulnerability to metal vagrants, and inability or difficulty to absorb several nutrients; the Baby Food market is highly regulated. The new low chlorate line from Jost Chemical assists customers to comply with (EU) 2020/685.

Food can be contaminated by chlorate and perchlorate (salts of chloric or perchloric acid) during different stages of production from the use of fertilizers and chlorinated disinfectants. Perchlorates can interfere with the human body’s ability to absorb iodine into the thyroid gland, which is a critical element in the production of thyroid hormones. In adults, the thyroid plays an important role in metabolism, making and storing hormones that help regulate the heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, and digestive metabolism. In fetuses and infants, thyroid hormones are critical for normal growth and development of the central nervous system.

How are Chlorates regulated?

The European Commission published Regulation (EU) 2020/685 amending Regulation (EC) No 1881/2006 regarding maximum levels for perchlorate in foodstuffs, which came into effect on 1 July 2020 for all EU Member States.

The new maximum residue levels (MRLs) for perchlorate for infant and baby food:

  • Infant formulae, follow-on formulae, foods for special medical purposes for infants and young children and food for infants: 0,01 mg/kg perchlorate
  • Baby food: 0,02 mg/kg perchlorate
